LAS VEGAS – The Dallas Mavericks’ bid to win a summer league championship for the second time in three years fell by the wayside Saturday night at the Thomas & Mack Center.

Unable to successfully climb out of an 0-12 hole, the Mavs were eliminated in the quarterfinals of the MGM Resorts NBA Summer League when they lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves, 108-82. That loss ended summer league play for the Mavs with a 3-2 record.

LAS VEGAS – If the Dallas Mavericks are unable to advance any farther in the MGM Resorts NBA Summer League, it won’t be because they haven’t had any adequate rest.

The Mavs (3-1) haven’t played since beating Croatia, 79-71, this past Wednesday. And they won’t play again until they face the Minnesota Timberwolves (4-0) in the quarterfinals of summer league action on Saturday at 9:30 p.m. CT at the Thomas & Mack Center.

Obviously, a lengthy layoff could have a positive or an adverse effect on a team.

MFFLs are like fans of every other sports team. They want results and they want them now.

That’s not a problem. That’s a good thing. Passion is something that comes only when you’ve had a franchise that has experienced success and raised expectations.

Some NBA teams are like that, too. Houston, the LA Clippers and Lakers, Brooklyn. They have conducted business over the last month in such a way that they and their fans expect enormous results in the 2019-20 season.

Porzingis, Mavericks make it official; let the new era begin

The future officially is now for the Mavericks.

The team and prized acquisition and restricted free agent Kristaps Porzingis signed the dotted line on Friday with the 7-3 center/forward accepting a multiyear offer that will give him and 20-year-old Luka Doncic the chance to grow into cornerstones of the franchise. The deal was widely reported to be for four years at the maximum allowable salary under terms of the NBA’s collective bargaining agreement.

Porzingis, 23, missed all of the 2018-19 season after knee surgery that cut short his 2017-18 season, in which he was named an all-star for the New York Knicks.

LAS VEGAS, July 11, 2019 – The Boston Celtics earned the top seed in the MGM Resorts NBA Summer League 2019 tournament, following the first seven days of action in Las Vegas. the Detroit Pistons (2), Minnesota Timberwolves (3), New Orleans Pelicans (4), Miami Heat (5), Dallas Mavericks (6), Brooklyn Nets (7) and Memphis Grizzlies (8) round out the eight tournament teams. This marks the first year of the eight-team tournament format.
