Elizabeth ‘Liz’ Anne Golson

Elizabeth “Liz” Anne Golson, 86, of Coleman, died February 12, 2019 at Holiday Hill Nursing Home. There will be a visitation February 23, from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m., immediately followed by a funeral service in Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Paul Judd, pastor of First United Methodist Church, Coleman, officiating. Interment will follow in the Burkett Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

She was born Elizabeth Anne Word on April 29, 1932 in Texarkana, Texas to William Conrad Word and Margaret Anne Patching Word. Liz graduated high school in Waco, TX in 1949. She then attended the University of Texas and Southwest Texas State Teachers College graduating with a Bachelors in Education in 1962. Liz then earned her Master’s Degree in Education in 1969. She married James Lorraine Golson on August 24, 1951 in San Marcos. He preceded her in death on May 10, 2001. Liz taught elementary school in Bronte starting in 1960 and then started teaching in Coleman in 1976. She loved teaching and started the Gifted and Talented program for the Coleman Independent School District. Liz educated many children in her career, and she encouraged each one to reach their potential. She was an avid reader, talented seamstress, and a passionate Argentina card player. She had a talent for finding the silver lining and for making everyone who walked through her door feel that they were exactly the person she was waiting to see. She was a member of the Association of Texas Professional Educators, The Texas Retired Teachers Association, and the United Methodist Church in Burkett.

In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Margaret Word Stafford; and daughter-in- law, Kathy Golson.

Liz is survived by one son, Jake Golson of Brownwood; one daughter, Michelle Lorraine Sexton and husband Robert of Coleman; grandchildren Misty Johnson and husband Travis, Jacob Golson, Kala Knighton, Kelsey Blake and husband David, Logan Wilkowich and wife Lindsay, Wade Golson; great-grandchildren, Mitchel Golson, Jaden Knighton, Katelyn Knighton, Carter Wilkowich, and Caroline Wilkowich.
