Central Texas Veterans Memorial to host special program

The World War I Centennial/Veterans Day/Armistice Day program will be Monday, November 12 at 11 a.m. at the Central Texas Veterans Memorial. This is the 100-year anniversary of the end of World War I. The World War I Centennial Commission, which is co-chaired by the five living United States ex-presidents, has honored the Central Texas Veterans Memorial as one of only 100 official World War I Centennial Memorials. Of the first 50 memorials selected, Brownwood’s was the only one in designated in Texas.

Organizers said they are honored to have two high ranking and highly decorated flag officers as keynote speakers. Lieutenant General James Terry Scott graduated from Coleman High School in 1960. He later taught at Howard Payne University. After retiring, Scott assisted veterans by chairing the bi-partisan veterans disability benefits commission and later chaired the advisory committee on disability compensation and health issues on behalf of the secretary of veteran’s affairs. Rear Admiral Jeffrey Lemmons graduated from Brownwood High School in 1975 and from the United States Naval Academy in 1979. He was designated as a naval aviator in November 1980. Lemmons is now back in Brownwood with family, enjoying ranching and farming.
