BHS Students Receive Honors at Annual Academic Awards Ceremony

The Brownwood High School Academic Awards Ceremony was held Monday, May 20, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. in the BHS Auditorium. Students were honored in a variety of academic and extracurricular fields, including the 2019 BHS Valedictorian and Salutatorian presentations.

Valedictorian honors were presented to Alexandra Laine Fowler, and Salutatorian honors were awarded to Emily Desiree Chapa.

Alex Fowler is the daughter of Dr. Lisa Fowler and Dr. Jim Fowler. While at BHS, Alex participated in Varsity Track and Field, where she was a regional qualifier all four years and a state qualifier her senior year in the 4 x 400 Relay. She was a part of the Varsity Cross Country team her junior year, the Varsity Volleyball team her sophomore year, and A Capella Choir her freshman and sophomore years. She ran in the state meet with her team for cross country. Alongside athletics, Alex has contributed to HOSA (Future Health Professionals), where she qualified for state in the Current Health Issues Exam her junior year, and the National Honor Society. Alex recently received her Pharmacy Technician License and is CPR-certified. Upon graduation, Alex will attend the University of Texas in Austin where she will major in Chemistry. After college, she plans on following in her parents’ footsteps by attending medical school, in hopes to become a surgeon.

Emily Chapa is the daughter of Luis and Gloria Chapa. While at high school Emily has been heavily involved in FFA and HOSA, with additional involvement in Key Club, Student Council, and National Honor Society. A few of Emily’s Career and Leadership Development Events (CDE & LDE) in FFA include Entomology, Chapter Quiz, Ag Issues, and Environmental/Natural Resources. She has attended all four events at the state level, with a semi-finalist ranking in Ag Issues, and placed 3rd High Individual at state in both Entomology and Chapter Quiz. In addition, she has served as the Cross Timbers District Vice-President as well as the Brownwood FFA President. As for HOSA, she has competed in Health Care Issues, Clinical Specialty, Physical Therapy, and HOSA Happenings. She recently advanced past state in HOSA Happenings and will be attending Internationals at World Disney in Florida. Emily has served as the Area 5 Vice-President for Texas HOSA and the Brownwood HOSA President. Through classroom instruction, Emily recently earned a Pharmacy Technician License and became CPR certified. Emily’s future plans include attending Texas A&M University and majoring in Microbiology. With Microbiology under her belt, she wants to create cancer treatments using CRISPR-CAS 9.
