BHS Choir Students Get Dizzy for Music Theory

Choir students in Mrs. Reeves’ class at Brownwood High School have been studying music theory, and on occasion it can look very different from the typical pencil and paper quizzes. During class on Friday, October 26, students were reviewing information they had learned, but not at their desks, instead as teams enthusiastically pitted against each other.

“We have been working on a lot of music theory this year,” said BHS Choir Teacher, Jennifer Reeves. “I gave them a review worksheet on Monday to see where they were at. We do have a mix of levels since not everyone has been in choir the same amount of years. We’ve had different theory learning styles, hands-on experiences, and games a few times this year. But, this particular game was given by my student teacher, Marissa Godbey from HPU.”

Students were split into three groups. Using Monday’s review sheet as a guide, students were equally divided into teams with differing levels of theory knowledge.

“She asked questions from the review sheet that we gave them on Monday and they had to spin a few times before they walked quickly to the board to write their answer,” explained Reeves. “They had a lot of fun and learned so much in the process.”

Student photographer, Shea Hughes, captured photos of the classroom game. Additional photos are viewable online at: http://ow.ly/kNZa30mqYxZ.
