Doug, also known as Nugget or Coach, was the son of Ladell and Douglas Keeney, and he was raised in San Saba, where he graduated from San Saba High School in 1968. Doug went on to pursue a college education at Southwest Texas State (now Texas State University), graduating in 1972 with a Bachelor’s degree in Teaching.

Doug, with his loving wife Cathy by his side, dedicated 37 years of his life to coaching and teaching. He coached girls and boys basketball, track and football throughout his tenure making a profound impact on the lives of countless students and athletes throughout Texas. His passion for education and sports was a hallmark of his career, and he built lasting relationships with students, fellow coaches, and many lifelong friends.

Doug was a proud sports fan, particularly the Dallas Cowboys, whom he cheered on during the glory days of Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman. He was also a lifelong Boston Celtics fan, forever in awe of Larry Bird’s legendary talent. He admired the talent of Pro golfer Jack Nicklaus and Doug enjoyed every opportunity to beat you at golf, along with many other sports like basketball, pool, shuffleboard, washers and Rook. Doug was a natural athlete who excelled in every sport he pursued, and his competitive spirit inspired all those around him.

Above all, Doug cherished the time spent with his grandchildren Leilani and Christian. To them, Mimi and Papaw were the embodiment of love and devotion, always ready to go to the park, feed the ducks and make unforgettable memories. His legacy of bigheartedness, laughter, and wittiness will live on in their hearts.

Doug leaves behind a family that loves him dearly and will forever miss his warm presence and sense of humor; however, we rejoice in the reuniting of Doug and Cathy in Heaven. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Catherine Keeney and his parents Douglas and Ladell Keeney. He is survived by his two daughters, Jamie Johnson-Smith and husband Barry of La Vernia, TX, Kristi Wilborn and husband Duane of Elk Grove, CA., two grandchildren Leilani Johnson and Christian Wilborn, and his sister Linda Linn of Alamogordo, NM.
