Deral Ervin Coats, born on September 28, 1951, in Abilene, Texas, passed away peacefully on March 13, 2025, at Hendrick Hospice Care in Abilene. A dedicated member of the truck driving industry, Deral spent his career as a truck driver and teacher, where he shared his knowledge and passion for the profession with others.

Growing up in Novice, Deral graduated from Novice High School and furthered his education at Tarleton State University. His love for life was evident in his hobbies and interests; he was a cowboy at heart. During his younger years, Deral gained recognition for his adventurous spirit as he competed in rodeos, particularly excelling in bull riding. Despite facing numerous challenges, including breaking every bone in his body except for his neck by the age of twenty-one, his tenacity shone through.

Deral had a profound appreciation for nature, often found enjoying the tranquility of his ranch, sitting on the porch with an ice-cold beer as he listened to the soothing sounds of the outdoors. He was also well known for his culinary skills, particularly his ability to smoke the best brisket and ribs, bringing family and friends together over delicious meals.

Deral is survived by his beloved son, Dustin Coats, and wife Erica of Abilene; four cherished grandchildren, CaLece Coats, Chance Coats, Caselynn Coats, and Devon Warner; and his brother, Charles Coats, and wife Vickie of Coleman. He will be deeply missed by all who had the honor of knowing him.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Claud and Hortense Shores Coats; one son, Clint Ervin “Bud” Coats; and one sister, Melinda Coats. Deral’s spirit and legacy will forever live on in the hearts of those who loved him.

A graveside service will take place on Saturday, March 15, 2025, at 4:00 PM, at Midway Cemetery. Services are entrusted to Stevens Funeral Home, 400 W. Pecan Street, in Coleman.

The family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions be made to the Midway Cemetery Association, c/o Stevens Funeral Home, P.O. Box 153, Coleman, Texas 76834.
