The words that will be written today will be inadequate to describe Michelle, not only because of how loved she was, but also because she was a woman of many, many…many words. If there was a story to tell, she would tell it to anyone who would listen, more than once. And she had interesting stories to tell! Michelle Lee Tyre was born in Montgomery, Alabama to Gerald Tyre and Carolyn Hammack Fairchild and from there she bounced around the world as an Air Force brat. She shared multiple experiences of her life in Greece, Iran, Maine, Germany, and many other places. As a teen, she moved to the metroplex area and later, she met Duke. They married in 1985 and welcomed children, Kari, Nikki, and Joe. This is where Michelle found her gift of nurturing. God gave her the gift of care giving. She would do this with her children, their friends, and anybody that needed a helping hand. She opened her home, heart, and kitchen to many family friends in need, offering meals, beds, and a listening ear (but you better bring one too!)
She used this talent as daycare provider, a volunteer with the San Saba EMS, and a CNA at the San Saba Nursing Home. She enjoyed reading Iris Johanson’s books, watching reality TV, and talking on the phone for hours with long distance friends. At the Fall Festival in Cherokee, you knew where to find Michelle. She would be at the Cake Walk no matter how many cakes she had already sent Duke to the truck with.
Above all things, she loved caring for others. Michelle loved BIG. Being Mimi to her grandkids (and their friends) were her greatest joy and you could find her at basketball games, dance recitals, or tee ball games. She never missed a Thanksgiving meal at the school with Jaxon and Ella. Whether it was feeding deer, collecting candy at a parade, playing dress up, or cheering at Disney on Ice, Michelle was at home being one of the kids. She marched to the beat of her own drum and was unapologetic about it. She never let others’ opinions bring her spirit down or keep her from being silly with the kids.
Although it did not change her loving and fun spirit, later in life, Michelle struggled with mental illness. It is important to the family that we use this opportunity to encourage people who are struggling with this, to get help. Be honest. Find a trusted person or professional.
