The Brownwood Lady Lions softball team added two more victories to its season tally Saturday to close out the first Battle on the Bayou with a 3-1 weekend record. The Lady Lions mauled Junction, 20-5, to start their second day of tournament action, and concluded with a 6-1 triumph over Hawley.

“The girls were excited to start this new tournament, Battle on the Bayou, and we had 15 teams come out. The girls were so happy to have something here local,” said Lady Lions head coach Cherita Munguia. “We hit the ball well this weekend and I’ve been impressed with their attitudes and how positive they are. We’re building a family, we’re building a community here and you can really start to see that take effect.”

In the victory over Junction, Jakayla Peek and Kaydence Allen both belted two-run home runs as part of Brownwood’s 14-hit onslaught.

The Lady Lions scored four runs in the first inning, nine in the second and seven in the third of the run-ruled contest.

Allen and Chloe Walls led the way with three hits each, Lila Mares and Carlee Burks each chipped in two, and Jeniffer Romero, Hanah Campos, Peyton Pena and Peek finished with one apiece. Allen’s four RBIs were a team-high trailed by three each from Mares and Burks, two from Peek and one apiece from Romero and Walls.

Brownwood was also aided by eight Junction errors, five walks and two hit batters.

Tied at 4 after one inning, Brownwood put the game out of reach in the top of the second inning.

Junction committed six of its errors in the second inning, while Mares drove in a run with a triple, Allen singled home a run, and Peek ripped a line drive two-run homer over the left field wall.

Then in the third inning, Walls tripled, Allen crushed a two-run shot over the left field wall, Pena and Tynlea Wilson singled, Burks drove home two with a base hit, Walls tacked on an RBI single, and Mares added another base hit.

Brownwood’s first inning featured RBI singles by Burks and Allen, an RBI ground out by Mares, Campos doubled, Walls singled, and Romero was hit by the first pitch of the contest.

Allen picked up the win in the circle, tossing two innings and yielding four unearned runs on three hits with six strikeouts and one hit batter. Wilson pitched the third and final inning and allowed one run on one hit with two walks and one strikeout.

Junction produced a bloop double, two bunt singles and took advantage of a bases-loaded throwing error to generate its four-run first inning. Then in the fifth, two walks and an RBI double down the first base line created the final run.

“I was really pleased with our hitting,” Munguia said. “They came out and they were aggressive. We saw all different types of pitching this weekend, slow, medium movement, and fast.”

In the finale against Hawley, the Lady Lions broke a scoreless tie with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning.

Campos reached on a one-out double, then Allen laid down a sacrifice bunt and a wild throw allowed Campos to score and Allen to reach third base. There, courtesy runner Maitlyn Esquivel came home on a wild pitch with the second run.

Hawley trimmed the deficit 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth, but the Lady Lions tacked on four more runs in their final at-bat in the top of the fifth.

Burks led off with a single before Walls laid down a bunt and reached on a throwing error. Mares’ sacrifice bunt was dropped by a diving Hawley first baseman allowing Burks to score, then Walls came home on an RBI sac fly by Allen. Peek then reached on another Hawley miscue in the outfield, which allowed Mares to cross the plate.

Brownwood finished with just three hits – one each by Peek, Campos and Burks – but took advantage of five Hawley errors and two walks.

Allen went the distance in the circle for the Lady Lions, yielding one run on two hits with eight strikeouts, one walk and two hit batters.

The Lady Lions (5-4) are back in action at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday as they host San Angelo Central.

Regarding areas Munguia hopes to see improvement, she said, “There’s a couple of coverage situations we need to work on and we need to make sure we’re consistent throughout the lineup. Our bunts looked good this last game, but we need to continue with that.”
