Alan Joe Welch, 69, of Santa Anna, Texas, passed away on February 16, 2025, in Abilene, Texas. He was born on May 28, 1955, in Gorman, Texas, to Freddie Joe Welch of Gorman and Lola Metzger Barr of Mason.
Alan graduated from Channelview High School in 1973. He proudly served in the Army from April 1978 to April 1982, achieving the rank of Specialist – 5 (E-5). During his service, he was stationed with “C” Troop, 2/1 Cavalry, 2nd Armored Division Forward, the first-ever American combat unit deployed in North Germany during the Cold War. He was recognized as the top gunner three years in a row and earned multiple military awards, including the Good Conduct Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Pistol Marksmanship Badge, and Hand Grenade Sharpshooter Badge.
Upon leaving the military, Alan married the love of his life, Judy Welch on June 22, 1984, and together they built a life filled with adventure, dedication, and a healthy dose of sarcasm. He enjoyed the outdoors, where he found fulfillment in ranch life, roping and riding horses, and exploring the beauty of National Parks. Later in life he realized he had a newfound love for the kitchen and golf. Alan built a career with Superior Essex Communications, where he worked until his retirement in 2020. For those who had the privilege of knowing and working with him, will give testament to his unmatched work ethic, integrity, and sense of humor.
Alan is survived by his wife, Judy Welch of 40 years; his mother, Lola Barr; daughters, Christina Welch-Schwartz and her husband Mark Schwartz of San Angelo, and Molly Shults and her husband Shaun Shults of Early; and his cherished grandchildren, Bo and Madison Dunn, Bentley Saladino, Reagan and Cooper Shults, and Raven, Raistlyn, and Colton Schwartz. He is also survived by several nieces, cousins, and extended family members.
He will be reunited with his son, Jason Alan Welch; his father, Freddie Joe Welch; his brother, Larry Dean Welch; his grandparents, Oatis and Pauline Welch and Clarence and Irene Metzger.
Alan will be deeply missed, but his love, wisdom, and adventurous spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. The family will hold a graveside memorial service on March 1, 2025, at 2 PM at Gooch Cemetery in Mason, Texas.
