Douglas Mitchell, 83

Douglas (Doug) Carrol Mitchell of Novice passed away on February 7, 2025, he was 83 years old.

He was born on September 15, 1941. Doug was proceeded in death by his wife, Billie Jean Mitchell, his father, Archie B Mitchell, his mother, Lula Mae Mitchell and his six older brothers, Osie Mitchell, A.B. Mitchell, Lonnie Mitchell, Delbert Mitchell, Max Mitchell and Jimmy Mitchell.

He is survived by his three sons, Duane Mitchell and wife Cindy of Big Lake, Texas, Snyder and wife Vicki of Fort Stockton, Texas and Michael and wife Charlotte of. Stephenville, Texas. Four grandsons, Caleb and Colton Mitchell of Big Lake, Coleman Mitchell of Fort Stockton and Rankin Mitchell and wife Amanda and two beautiful great granddaughters, Clara Jane and Carly Nichole of Fort Stockton. And special friends Monica, Bree and Samantha.

Doug started school in Coleman, Texas, then the family moved to May, Texas, then moved back to Coleman where he graduated from Coleman High School. After he graduated, he worked at the newspaper in Coleman. During this time, he met and married Billie Jean Parham. Later they moved to McCamey, Texas where he worked at the newspaper, then later went to work for Shell Pipeline. He retired from Shell at the age of 58 in 2000 and moved to the family’s ranch. Every morning, he would drive into Coleman and have breakfast and give the waitstaff and Monica at Hildalgo’s a hard time. When the grandsons were old enough, they loved to go into town with Grandpa and “shoot the cow” at breakfast with all the special friends at the restaurant. He served on the McCamey ISD school board for many years and coached little league baseball. He was very involved with the 4-H club, stock shows and was very instrumental in getting the McCamey 4-H barn built. He was a member of the Optimist Club where every Christmas season he would sell Christmas trees. He loved to fish, go to horse races and to the Comanche Red River Casino in Oklahoma.

The family will host a visitation from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday, February 14, 2025, at Stevens Funeral Home. Family and friends are invited to a funeral service celebrating his life at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 15, 2025, at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Gerald Bastin, pastor at First Baptist Church in Big Lake, officiating. A private interment will follow in the Atoka Cemetery in Novice. Services are entrusted to Stevens Funeral Home, 400 W. Pecan Street, in Coleman.

The viewing will begin at 8:00 a.m. Friday, February 14, 2025, at Stevens Funeral Home.

Serving as pallbearers will be Rankin Mitchell, Coleman Mitchell, Caleb Mitchell, Colton Mitchell, Monty Bohanan, and Tim Welling. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Jessie DeLaRosa, Steve Vail, James Dieterich, Gary Elliot, Leon Patrick, and Ron Shahan.

The family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions in memory of Doug be made to the Coleman Senior Center, P.O. Box 785, Coleman, Texas 76834.
