Stars of Texas draws 275 art pieces for judging

Saturday, February 1, the Stars of Texas Juried Art Exhibit welcomed 130 artists from across the state who entered 275 pieces of art to be considered for this year’s exhibit at the Depot and Cultural Center. 64 of which were from Brown County. 

127 paintings, drawings, photography, sculpture, digital, multimedia, and fiber arts were selected for the exhibit, by Juror Tim Harding, Professor of Art at Tarleton State University. Over $7,000 will be awarded to artists during an invitation only reception and awards ceremony on February 8. 

On display will be works from 43 cities across Texas, the farthest traveled artist came from Amarillo. 11 of these are works of young artists, ages 15-21, a new category for this year’s exhibit. 

The public is invited to visit this free exhibit from February 9-22. Gallery hours will be as follows : Sundays 1-5pm, Monday-Friday 9am-6pm and Saturdays 10am-5pm.

During the exhibit each year, two contests are held. Feb. 1, the Digital Shootout challenged 10 photographers to spend a few hours capturing a photo that fit an assigned theme. Feb. 22, artists will spend several hours painting on site during the annual Paint Off which will feature a silent auction. Visitors to the exhibit can view the artists’ progress and bid on paintings through a silent auction.

People of all ages are invited to attend art demonstrations of various media on Thursdays, Feb. 13 and 20. 

The exhibit has added a new free event on Feb. 15 (10 AM – 2 PM) for families, children and the young-at-heart. Hands-on art activities, story telling by the Brownwood Lyric Players, artist demonstrations, gallery hunts and self guided tours will be enjoyed by those participating. Activities are geared towards children ages 4-13.
