The Brownwood ISD issued the following information Thursday:
The Brownwood ISD (BISD) Board of Trustees met for a regular session meeting on Monday, January 13, 2025 at 6:30 p.m. The session was called to order by Board President, Michael Cloy. The invocation was led by Father Tony Franco from St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Brownwood Middle School (BMS) students Emerson Evans, Leighton Burnett, and Logan Goodrich led The Pledge of Allegiance.
STUDENT PERFORMANCE
The BMS Small Band Ensemble performed an arrangement of “In the Bleak Midwinter” by Gustav Holst under the direction of Mr. Juan Hernandez.
INSTRUCTIONAL FOCUS
BISD BOARD OF TRUSTEES – SCHOOL BOARD RECOGNITION MONTH
January is School Board Recognition Month, and BISD joins the Texas Association of School Boards and other districts across the state to honor the countless contributions of these locally elected advocates for Texas schoolchildren and public schools. Students and staff throughout the district put together customized gifts to show their appreciation to each Board member. BISD Board members pictured are (left to right) Roderick B. The following groups and individuals were recognized by BISD and were presented with certificates highlighting their achievements.
BISD SPOTLIGHT TEACHERS AND STAFF
The BISD Spotlight recognizes members of the faculty and staff who go the extra mile to ensure excellence in education for all our students. Spotlight recipients are chosen from peer nominations and awards are provided through a sponsorship by Jacobs Family Pharmacy and Brownwood Education Foundation. January 2025 honorees were Northwest Elementary Pre-K teacher Misty Hill and East Elementary secretary Bea Fanning. Spotlight recipients are pictured with BISD Trustee Amaray Doremus and (top) Northwest Assistant Principal Shelby Tibbitts and Northwest Principal Amy Morris, and (bottom) East Elementary Principal Christi Burks.
ELEMENTARY ACADEMIC UIL
BISD elementary students earning first place in their Academic UIL competition category were recognized and are pictured below with BISD Trustee Diane Thompson and Northwest Elementary Music teacher and UIL coach Lauren Mays.
MIDDLE SCHOOL ACADEMIC UIL
BMS students placing in the top three in their Academic UIL competition category were recognized and are pictured below with BMS Math teacher Amber Villalpando, BMS Assistant Principal Jake Senkirik, BISD Trustee Diane Thompson, BMS Principal Mykia Anderson, and BMS Science teacher Timothy Thomas.
EXECUTIVE SESSION
The Board entered executive session at 6:50 p.m. to discuss security and personnel matters including the superintendent contract. The Board exited the executive session at 8:10 p.m. and returned to regular session.
SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT
Dr. Young provided the following updates and information:
• An updated budget report was provided to the Board.
• Options for next year’s school calendar will be finalized with input from the community and BISD staff. A recommendation by the Site-Based Decision Making Committee will be made for the Board to review next month.
• Discussions regarding revisions to the Additional Day School Year (ADSY) summer program are underway.
• Work continues on Bond 2023 projects.
o The indoor multi-purpose student activity center building has framework with roofing and siding panels currently being installed.
o The Snodgrass building renovation is complete.
o Work at Gordon Wood Stadium continues with Phase 3 of the project to begin after next football season.
o Baseball and softball fields are ready for practices and games. Weather delayed some progress on the parking lot, but construction continues.
o Demo on the middle school locker rooms is ongoing with the old foundation removal going down 3.5 feet.
o A few safety and security projects are still being completed including new camera and fencing installations.
DISCUSSION & ACTION ITEMS DEPARTMENTAL REPORTS Enrollment/Transfer Report: The report included a total enrollment of ,3391 for the district along with a detailed breakdown of enrollment data by campus. A total of 248 Out-of-District Transfers (into BISD from other districts) were reported as of January 7, 2025.
Quarterly Investment Report: A Quarterly Investment Summary covering September-November 2024 was provided to the Board for review.
CONSIDER APPROVAL OF SUPERINTENDENT’S CONTRACT
Trustee Jones made a motion to extend an employment contract to Dr. Joe Young as Superintendent of Schools from January 13, 2025 to January 13, 2030. Trustee Smith seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
CONSIDER APPROVAL OF 2023-24 FINANCIAL AUDIT
The annual financial audit has been completed. Cameron Aaron from the Pattillo, Brown, and Hill Accounting Firm presented the BISD 2023-2024 audit report to the Board. BISD received a clean opinion from the firm, the highest level of assurance offered. Trustee Jones moved that the audit be approved as presented. Trustee Doremus seconded the motion. The motion was unanimously approved.
CONSENT AGENDA
The following items were listed for consideration on the Consent Agenda.
1. Minutes from December 9, 2024 Meeting Trustee Doremus moved that the Consent Agenda be approved as presented. Trustee Thompson seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
