The Brownwood Lions took a more deliberate offensive approach in their third home game in four days, and secured their second consecutive victory with a 51-43 triumph over Class 3A No. 17 Jim Ned Tuesday afternoon at Warren Gym.
Normally a fast-paced, up-and-down offensive attack, the Lions (4-2) focused more on their half-court game against Jim Ned (2-1).
“We’re going to have to be able to do that,” said Lions head coach Will Parker. “Brock and Glen Rose, they’re not going to let us run, they’re going to have plenty of people getting back. We’re going to have to be able to come down the court and if we don’t get something in transition we’re going to have to be able to run some offense. We ran a lot of different stuff today which is what I wanted, so we have a lot of film to go over this weekend.”
The slower-paced offense also resulted in fewer turnovers for the Lions than in recent games, while the Brownwood defense forced Jim Ned to cough up the ball 18 times.
“Our defense has to be our backbone, we have to force teams to turn the ball over,” Parker said. “And I thought Casey (Friebel) did a good job trying to manage the game. When we didn’t turn the ball over, I thought we got good shots.”
Three Lions finished in double figures as Friebel again led the charge with 16 points, while Durham Brown chipped in a season-high 15 off the bench and Ross Strasner added 13.
“We’ve got some guys that can shoot and if we can have four guys out there that can knock down some shots it’s hard for other teams to key in on somebody else,” Parker said. “Teams are going to really focus in on Casey and some other guys, so those fourth and fifth guys and guys coming in off the bench, they’ve got to be ready for their opportunities.”
Sanitago Alvizo added three points for Brownwood while Elias Perez and Noah Pyle scored two points apiece
For Jim Ned, Wyatt Nickson led the way with 17 points followed by Boston Bullock with nine and Chase Davis with eight points.
The Lions continued their trend of fast starts as Brownwood owned a 15-12 lead after one quarter that grew to 32-17 by halftime and stood at 41-22 heading into the fourth period.
In the final quarter, however, Jim Ned tallied the first seven points to close the gap to 41-29 until Brown drained a three-pointer at the 5:17 mark to push the Lions’ lead back to 15 points. The Indians continued to whittle away at the Brownwood advantage, creeping within seven, 46-39, with 2:31 remaining, but the Lions resisted Jim Ned’s late threat.
“It was a good start again and I liked that we were able to work on some of our end of game stuff, we really hadn’t been able to do that,” Parker said. “We definitely have to clean up the end of the game, but I’m very proud of the effort. Everybody got in, everybody got some good minutes, hopefully everybody got better.”
Next up for the Lions is a 7:30 p.m. Tuesday home date against Comanche.
