The week of Nov. 11, the Inland Fisheries Abilene District – Texas Parks and Wildlife, led by fisheries biologist Michael Homer Jr., and Brown County Water Improvement District (BCWID) conducted a fish habitat enhancement project to improve fishing quality at Lake Brownwood.
The project was a collaborative effort with Major League Fishing – Black Bass Stewardship Group, Brown County Water Improvement District (BCWID), and TX B.A.S.S. Nation.
For the project, habitat structures including Reef Balls, recycled concrete culverts, 40-inch MossBack Fish Habitat Conservation Cubes, Christmas tree brush piles, and several 60-inch MossBack Safe Haven XLs were deployed among five locations into Lake Brownwood. MossBack Fish Habitat structures were donated as part of the Major League Fishing Fisheries Management Division Minn Kota Habitat Restoration Project, supported by MossBack Fish Habitat and American Feeders, and the culverts and Christmas trees were donated by BCWID with additional support from Home Depot. Additional funding support was also provided by the TPWD Largemouth Bass Conservation License Plate, Reservoir Fish Habitat Partnership Small Grant Program, and AFTCO Conservation Grant.
The project will improve the overall fishing experience at the lake by potentially improving angler catch rates by aggregating fish such as largemouth bass, sunfishes, catfishes, and crappie, around the structures and provide long-lasting fish structures for the lake.
During periods of lower water level, the structures will also be deep enough to provide cover for sportfish and prey species.
The locations of the deployed habitat structures are available HERE.
