Mona Jacquita Jordan (Anderson), affectionately known as “Chick” to those that knew her, passed away from us while at PAM Specialty Hospital in San Antonio, Texas, on Sunday, October 6, 2024, at the age of 86. Chick was born on September 23, 1938, in Crane County, Texas to Dr. Buster Lester Anderson and Mona Cordia Anderson. She is survived by her two children, Delinda Skaggs (Larry) of Brownwood, and Rick Jordan (Becky) of Mason. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Sammy Skaggs (Jess), Staci Brodbeck (Josh), Brooke Jordan, Ryan Jordan (Ty), and seven great-grandchildren. Jimmie Jordan, her husband of 67 years, preceded Chick in death by just 16 days. Her brother Bobby Anderson also preceded her in passing at the early age of two in 1944.
Chick attended Harlandale Schools in San Antonio where she enjoyed cheerleading and played softball, volleyball, and tennis. She was taught to drive a car at a very early age and became her father’s appointed driver on numerous trips between Oklahoma and Texas when they were visiting family and friends. She shared her love of driving with her father Buster, and at one point brought home a couple of drag racing trophies competing with a friend’s car. After graduating from Harlandale High School in 1956, Chick attended Southwest Texas State Teachers College in San Marcos (1956-1961) where she finished with a bachelor’s degree in science of education. She followed in her mother’s footsteps not long after graduation and began a lifelong teaching career in 1963 in elementary schools. She spent 3 years teaching in San Antonio and San Angelo, Texas before entering the Brownwood ISD in January 1966, mostly as a 6th grade teacher until her retirement in 1993. While teaching fulltime, Chick obtained her Master of Education degree in 1971 by attending Howard Payne College during summer breaks.
Mrs. Jordan, as all students referred to her, made a lasting impact and impression on decades of students that passed through her class. Her passion for teaching and to help, encourage, motivate, counsel, and just demonstrate love for her students is her legacy that is remembered by the multitudes of students that encountered her in class. Witnesses of the experience of having Mrs. Jordan for 6th grade math included both her son, Rick Jordan, and (unknown at that time) her future daughter-in-law Becky Roby (Jordan).
During Chick’s freshman year at San Marcos, she met Jim Jordan who was a senior at the college. They were married in 1957 and began their life and careers together that would last 67 years. Chick and Jim would spend the bulk of their working years Monday through Friday in Brownwood at their main jobs, and on the weekends in Mason, Texas working, hunting, and enjoying the lifelong family ranch. Following Chick’s retirement from Brownwood ISD, Jimmie and Chick moved from Brownwood to Mason to spend the rest of their retirement years enjoying their family ranch and the hill country area.
Chick and Jim were very involved in the activities of their children and grandchildren throughout their lives attending all the games, meets, recitals, and programs they possibly could in support of the young ones growing up. Chick was a constant support system herself in her understanding, compassion, kind words, and love that she displayed toward her family and friends, and she always carried a smile and a sense of comfort wherever she went.
There is a memorial service planned for Saturday, November 23, 2024, at First United Methodist Church in Mason, Texas for both Chick and Jimmie Jordan. Visitation is to begin at 1:00 PM, and the memorial service is to follow at 2:00 PM.
