Man charged with murder after allegedly stabbing daughter’s husband

The Brownwood Police Department issued the following press release Thursday morning:

On Wednesday, October 2, 2024, at approximately 8:15 a.m., 911 operators received a call from a female who reported that her father just stabbed her husband. The female and her husband were now driving to the Hendrick Medical Center-Brownwood for treatment.

rownwood Police Officers were dispatched to the Hendrick ER as well as the address reported by the caller, a residence in the 2400 block of Ave B.

Corporal Jessica Risdon arrived at the ER and identified the caller as well as the victim, who was identified as 42-year-old Tony Dewayne Roberts. Cpl Risdon learned that all of the subjects involved were at a family residence in the 2400 block of Ave. B, when an argument broke out between the caller and her sisters. Roberts attempted to intervene in the fight, prompting her father, identified as 58-year-old Joe Garner Caine, to exit the residence and confront Roberts. At this encounter Roberts was stabbed by Caine.

Officers at the residence, arrived to secure the scene and identify all who were present. Caine was positively identified and interviewed by Detectives with the Brownwood Police Department.  All individuals at the scene cooperated in the investigation and spoke with the officers/detectives about the incident.

Roberts was given emergent medical care, but was never stabilized to the degree that he could be care flighted to UT- Dallas for a higher level of care.  At approximately 9:15 p.m., detectives were notified of Roberts passing at Hendrick-Brownwood.

A warrant for Murder was requested and issued out of 35th District Court, signed by Judge Mike Smith.

Cain was then contacted at his residence and arrested for the warrant. He was booked into the Brown County Jail with a bond set at $250,000.
