Doris Merlene Dearson Stacy was born on February 8, 1927, in Priddy, Texas, where she spent her early years. A proud graduate of Priddy High School’s Class of 1945, she met the love of her life, Lee Roy Stacy, in 1946. They married on August 3, 1947, at Zion Lutheran Church in Priddy, Texas. In 1952, they settled in Goldthwaite, Texas, after moving from Dallas.

Merlene’s early career included positions at Employer Casualty Insurance and Piggly Wiggly Grocery, followed by work for Dr. T.C. Graves. However, her most cherished role began after the birth of her son, when she devoted herself to being a full-time mother. Actively involved in her community, Merlene contributed to Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, and served as a children’s supervisor at First United Methodist Church. She was a lifelong member of the Methodist Women and participated in the Civic Club and Garden Club, showing her dedication to service
and community.

Merlene had a special fondness for Halloween, delighting in the children who came trick-or-treating in their costumes. She loved giving them goodies and, for those brave enough, a little scare to make it more fun. Her joy and playful spirit made Halloween a memorable time for the
children in her community.

Merlene was a devoted homemaker who found joy in cooking and feeding the masses. She often prepared meals not only for her family but also for her grandchildren’s friends throughout their school years. Her home was a warm, welcoming haven where her grandchildren “ran the show,”
getting away with just about anything—including bringing in pets that weren’t allowed at their own homes. They were free to make the biggest messes without much consequence, as Merlene simply cherished their company. To many, she was lovingly known as “MeMa.”

Merlene was preceded in death by her parents, Edward “Ed” Lewis Dearson and Ida Louise Schwartz Dearson; her husband, Lee Roy Stacy; her son, Ricky Lee Stacy; and her infant daughter, Cynthia Jan Stacy.

She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Melba Jo Stacy; her granddaughter, Chastidy Lee StacyAbles; her grandson, Brody LaFawn Stacy; her great-grandson, Sawyer Lee Ables; and many family and friends.

Merlene lived a life filled with love, faith, and service, always embodying her belief in showing kindness to others. Her gentle spirit, playful nature, and dedication to her family and friends will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Stacy-Wilkins Funeral Home. Her funeral service will take place on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, at 1:00 pm at Stacy-Wilkins Chapel, with interment following at Goldthwaite Memorial Cemetery.
