Miami Dolphins star wide receiver Tyreek Hill was held out of team drills during Wednesday’s joint practice with the  Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Tampa, Fla. due to a thumb injury.

Hill was initially seen with a removable brace on his right hand during Tuesday’s practice; while he did participate in some portions of Wednesday’s practice, head coach Mike McDaniel told reporters that the team is trying to make sure that Hill does not make the injury worse.  McDaniel also did not elaborate about when or how Hill sustained the injury, stating: “I kind of alluded to it with [wide receiver] Jaylen Waddle back at home, but there are certain situations where you are in training camp and practicing. Tyreek could practice today. However, there are also times that, because of the timing of where their bodies are at, kind of puts them at risk to get further injury. And so, from a medical standpoint, you’re just trying to let something cool down so you don’t have something happen at the expense of regular-season games. So, he’s been very active. but we’re trying to make sure we keep him out of harm’s way.” (per ESPN).

Hill was among the starters who did not participate in the Dolphins’ 13-6 preseason win over the Washington Commanders on Saturday in Miami Gardens, Fla., or in their win over the Atlanta Falcons in their Aug. 9 preseason opener. Hill totaled 238 catches for 3,509 yards, including a league-high 1,799 in 2024, over his last two seasons. He scored 21 touchdowns during that span.
