As of Wednesday afternoon, the new artificial turf installation at Gordon Wood Stadium was in the home stretch. At the beginning of the week, the addition of infill was all that was remaining for a project that began April 27.

The last time the turf was replaced at Gordon Wood Stadium was ahead of the 2016 football season.

One of the two new goalposts is also in place, while all four light towers have been removed ahead of the new LED light installation expected to occur later this month.

The rest of the stadium renovations – ADA/code improvements (ramp access, aisles and stairs renovated for code compliance, ADA parking), new concessions and restrooms, home bleacher addition of 1,000 seats, and a new press box with elevator – will begin after the conclusion of the 2024 Lions’ football season.

The Lions’ first action at Gordon Wood Stadium is set for Aug. 16 as they host Jason Witten’s Argyle Liberty Christian Warriors in the first scrimmage of the preseason.

At the baseball and softball fields, turf subgrade installation is near completion. Drainage pipes are being placed at the softball field while bleacher footers and electrical wiring are in progress at the baseball field.

The new baseball concession stand is under design, while the parking lot design is nearly complete and will be going out for bids later this month.

The renovations are part of a $59 million bond that was passed by Brownwood voters in May 2023.
