BANGS – Citizens of Bangs filled the seats at the Bangs Community Center Tuesday evening for a robust and well attended City Council candidate forum hosted by the Pecan Valley Republican Women. According to PVRW President, Rebecca Mendoza, this is the first candidate forum ever held in Bangs.
Mayor Steve Whittenberg offered a brief welcome and a statement on the responsibilities and duties of the city council. He stated that the city council is the governing body overseeing all municipal operations. It sets policy and direction for the city by enacting ordinances, passing resolutions, and deciding issues ranging from the annual budget, public safety, streets and infrastructure, employment, tax rates, and usage fees for city services.
The forum was moderated by Dennis Graham, an active community member in the political process, and a long time Texas Republican State Delegate. In 2016, Graham was elected to serve as a Texas National Delegate at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Ohio.
Each candidate present was asked the same three questions that ranged from the current condition of the city streets, and specifically how would you boost the Economic Development Corporation and the Municipal Development District in promoting economic growth and development in the community.
The incumbents running are William Loyd, Greg Parrott, and Waymond Sheppard. Other candidates running are Slade Byars, Jerry Ellison, Cynthia Johnson Frizzell, Aaron Gomes, and Carol Wells.
The candidate forum is posted on the PVRW Facebook page.
