Sherry Ann Colin Tunnell, 73, was called home by her Lord Jesus on April 7, 2024 at her home on Lake Brownwood. She was born on February 22, 1951 in Odessa, Texas to Bob and Mary Jo Colin.
Sherry grew up in Odessa and graduated from Permian High School in (almost) the summer of ’69. She attended Howard Payne University in Brownwood, where she met her husband of 51 years and graduated with a degree in Psychology in 1973. She married John Ray Tunnell, Jr. on December 9, 1972 at First Baptist Church of Brownwood. After graduation, she followed her husband as he served in the Air Force for the next six years. After leaving the Air Force, they spent nine years operating Flat Rock on Lake Brownwood. After John was called into the ministry, Sherry earned her teaching certificate, taught elementary school for 22 years, and then tutored special needs kids until last fall. She was a beloved pastor’s wife for 28 years.
Sherry loved being a Sunday School teacher, a women’s Bible Study leader, an interpreter for the deaf. She loved taking walks and memorizing scripture. She loved the lake. She loved Christmas and her Christmas tree. Her legacy was the devotional book that she authored. She will be remembered by her family for her constant encouragement and prayers. She will be remembered by others for her ministry, counsel, and her teaching. And most of all, she was a powerful, faithful prayer warrior.
Sherry wanted to give a special thanks to her Sunday school class and church family at Rocky Creek Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Bob and Mary Jo Colin, her sister, Donna Kim Colin, her sister-in-law, Susan Annette Vance, and her brother-in-law Chris Allan Tunnell.
She is survived by her husband, John Ray Tunnell, Jr., her four sons and their beautiful families: John Colin Tunnell (Amy), Jesse Ryan Tunnell (Jill), James Travis Tunnell, and Jordan Zachary Tunnell (Gabby), and her 10 amazing grandchildren: John Robert, Luke Colin, Adam Ryan, Sammi Grace, Cara Ann, Molly Kate, Kimberly Joy, Lilly Beth, Abram Zachary, Samuel James, her sister Cathy Gail English (Robby), her brother-in-law, Terry Vance, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Sherry’s family will host a visitation from 6 to 8 pm Thursday, April 11th at Heartland Funeral Home in Early. Funeral Services will be 10 am on Friday, April 12th at First Baptist Church in Brownwood under the direction of Heartland Funeral Home.
