Veta was born Oct. 3, 1950, in Temple, Texas, the youngest of three daughters of Clarine Smith Deaver and W.M. “Willie” Deaver.

As a sophomore in high school, she moved with her family to Bangs, Texas where she met Stephen Young.

The couple married May 27, 1972, in Brownwood, Texas and very soon after, moved to Del Rio, Texas, where she began her banking career at First Savings and Loan.  The Youngs relocated to Brownwood in 1982 and she went to work at Southern Savings and Loan.

The move to Brownwood enabled her to complete her bachelor’s degree in business administration at Howard Payne University in 1991. Veta loved learning and furthered her education by completing many continuing education courses.

Veta went from being a student to joining the staff of Howard Payne as the director of admissions and recruiting.   Even today, many students credit her with helping them make the decision to attend the university.

After many years with HPU, Veta joined Citizens National Bank and eventually Landmark Life of Brownwood where she spent the last 17 years of her career, retiring in 2017.

Always active in the Brownwood community, Veta was a Board member and volunteer of the Brownwood Regional Hospital, Downtown Brownwood Association, American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, Noah Project and Brownwood State School. She served three times as president of Brownwood Women’s Club.  She and her close friend Judy Ehrke were the first women elected to the Chamber of Commerce Contact Club. In 1992, the Brownwood Chamber of Commerce honored her as Woman of the Year.

Throughout her life, Veta was a joyful, fun and loving aunt to her nieces and nephews, teaching them to fish and indulging them with her time and enthusiastic support. Stephen and their extended families were the centerpiece of her life.

Veta was preceded in death by her parents and her in-laws, Zita and Thomas M. Young, by a sister, Lynn Barnes, and three brothers-in-law: Travis Barnes (Lynn), Howard L. Rambo (Sharon) and Gary Morrison (Mari Kay).
