Thomas “Tom” Burns, a beloved band director and mentor, passed away on March 28, 2024, in Coleman, Texas. Born on July 22, 1941, in Lexington, Oklahoma, Tom’s journey through life was marked by a deep passion for music and unwavering dedication to his students and most importantly, his family.
Tom grew up in Harlingen, where he graduated from high school. He then attended Del-Mar College in Corpus Christi and graduated from Sam Houston University in Huntsville with a Bachelor of Music in Music Education and later earning his Master of Music Education. On April 20, 1969, Tom married Linda Conway at First Presbyterian Church in Orange.
Tom’s career as a band director spanned several school districts including Waller ISD, Yoakum ISD, Brookshire ISD, Graham ISD, Wink ISD, Santa Anna ISD, Bangs ISD, Howard-Payne University, and Coleman ISD. His commitment to excellence led him and his students to numerous victories in competitions throughout the years. Tom’s impact went beyond just teaching music; he uplifted his students from the heart and empowered them to excel in their craft.
Outside of his professional life, Tom indulged in various hobbies and interests that brought him immense joy. He loved playing golf and achieved the remarkable feat of getting two holes in one! Being a part of community bands in Brownwood and Glenwood Springs allowed him to share his musical talent with others. Tom also had a knack for restoring vintage cars and enjoyed traveling during the summer months with his family. Their adventures took them across 49 states, Canada, the British Isles, and France, creating lasting memories together.
Tom’s accomplishments extended beyond his career achievements. He dedicated time to volunteering with Meals on Wheels and was an active member of the First Methodist Church where he sang in the Chancel Choir. His selfless spirit and commitment to serving others left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
Tom is preceded in death by his parents Samuel William and Nan Inez Hickox Burns, as well as his brother John Burns. He is survived by his loving wife Linda Burns of Coleman; daughter and son-in-law Ginny and Bill Bultman of Snowmass Village, Colorado; grandson William Bultman of Snowmass Village, Colorado; nephew Kevin Burns of Joplin, Missouri; God-daughter Linda Shellito and husband Mark of Coleman.
The family will host a visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. April 1, 2024 at Stevens Funeral Home, 400 West Pecan Street in Coleman. There will be a Celebration of Life service 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, 2024 to honor the beautiful life lived by Tom Burns. May his kindness, passion for music, and devotion to family continue to inspire all those who were fortunate enough to know him.
In lieu of flowers, Tom’s family has suggested that memorial donations can be made to the Coleman Senior Center, P. O. Box 785, Coleman, Texas 76834 or the donor’s favorite charity.
