The Texas Department of Public Safety and Texas Rangers early Wednesday morning released the name of the suspect involved in the officer involved shooting that occurred on Monday, December 25, 2023 on US Highway 84 north of Coleman. The suspect is deceased and was identified as Jose Martin Hernandez Jr, 43 years of age, male from Midland, Texas.

On Monday, December 25, 2023, the Coleman County Sheriff’s Department, assisted by officers of the Coleman Police Department, engaged in a pursuit which had originated from a call of suspicious activity in southern Coleman County, during which a firearm had been displayed.  The suspect fled the scene and pursuit was initiated which progressed through the City of Coleman. 

The suspect was stopped on US Hwy 84 several miles north of the City of Coleman.  Officers at the scene discharged their weapons in response to a threat, striking the suspect.  The suspect was transported by helicopter from the scene for emergency medical treatment. 

This incident is currently under investigation by the Texas Ranger Division of the Texas Department of Public Safety.
