The Brownwood City Council during Tuesday’s meeting approved a lease with the Pecan Valley Regional Domestic Violence Shelter, Inc., better known as The Ark

The City of Brownwood and Brown County own the property and building, along with a vacant lot across the street for parking, that it has been leasing to the Ark since 2004. The lease was a 10-year lease with a 10-year renewal and that lease is expiring at the end of this year.

The Ark asked the City to renew the lease for another 10 years on the same terms and conditions as the previous lease—on an “As-Is” basis, must use the property for shelter purposes, does not have to pay a lease payment, but is obligated to maintain the property in a good habitable condition.

In other items of business Tuesday:

The Council approved a resolution to enter into an agreement with the Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) to replace the existing Automated Weather Observing System (AWOS) at the airport utilizing City reserves.

The City has an opportunity to replace the AWOS with a new grant opportunity from TXDOT at a 90/10 match. This resolution is basically the start of the application process which will require approval from TXDOT. Once approved, the City will be required to solicit bids, award a contract, pay for all costs upfront, and then seek reimbursement for funds. The total cost of the project is approximately $125,000 with the actual cost to the City of $12,500.
