Danny ‘Bopa’ Conner, 74, of Brownwood

Danny Claude “Bopa” Conner, age 74 of Brownwood, passed away December 1, 2023, in Brownwood.

Memorial service for Danny Claude “Bopa” Conner will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 13, 2023, at Blaylock Funeral Home Chapel with Bill Slaymaker officiating. Visitation will be held from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. prior to services.

Danny was born on October 16, 1949, in Plainview, Texas to Aron Hamilton and Virgie Mae (Tyler) Conner.

The family moved to Grosvenor, Texas when Danny was in First Grade. There he attended school in a one room schoolhouse where each grade sat in a different row. Grosvenor School closed at the end of his First-Grade year, and he then attended Bangs. While at Bangs, Danny played football and was active in the FFA where he showed hogs. Danny attended Brownwood High School, his senior year and graduated in 1968.

In 1969 Danny volunteered for the Army requesting to be sent to Vietnam so his younger brother couldn’t go to Vietnam. While in the Army he was stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas; Fort Still, Oklahoma; Vietnam, and Germany.

After his time in the Army, Danny returned home to marry his high school sweetheart. Danny and Jo Ann Churchwell were married on April 1,1972 at Central Baptist Church in Brownwood, Texas, they had one daughter, Beth Frakes.

Danny worked hard to take care of his family, sometimes having two or three jobs at a time. Some of which included Superior Cable, security at Kohler, night auditor at Holiday Inn, substitute teacher at San Angelo ISD and Grape Creek ISD. He worked for Dr. Pepper of Brownwood on weekends. Danny was utility supervisor for the City of Brownwood before going to work for the State of Texas.

Danny worked for Underwoods while in high school and college. He later went back to work for Underwoods in 2015 and worked there until he passed away.

The highlight of Danny’s life was his granddaughter, Cheyenne Frakes, Cheyenne and her 2 sons Levi and Connor Carter were what kept the smile on Bopa’s face. Nothing made Danny happier than seeing Cheyenne marry Gabe Perez.

He is preceded in death by his parents Aron and Virgie Conner, his sisters Violet Mae Conner, Perry Allred, and Lana Pearl Conner Hicks.

He is survived by wife JoAnn Conner Churchwell, daughter Beth Frakes, granddaughter Cheyenne and husband Gable Perez, great grandsons Levi Whitby Carter and Connor Nelson Carter.
