J Marie “Janie” Johnson-Knox, 90, of Brownwood

J Marie “Janie” Johnson-Knox, born January 1, 1933 passed away peacefully on November 10, 2023 in Brownwood, Texas. Private services are under the direction of Heartland Funeral Home.

Born in Tulia, Texas to Andrew “JJ” Greenfield and Clois Greenfield, née Knight. Janie the third of four children, grew up in Happy, Texas. She graduated from Happy High School and married James “Jim” Franklin Johnson in 1950, until his death in 2011. Together they had four children: Linda Carol Bockmeyer, née Johnson, John “Baby Johnny” Franklin Johnson, Lar Ann Johnson and William Riley Johnson. She was preceded in death by both of her parents and her sisters, Nel Mitchell and Del Davis, her first husband, James and her children, Linda and John.

A longtime resident of Cimarron, New Mexico, Janie volunteered with the Cimarron Head Start program, where she was known as Granny, helping a generation of preschoolers read.

Janie was an avid quilter, seamstress and she also crocheted. She loved puzzles, crosswords, square dancing, detective novels, and in her early years’ writing. Always active in her church, she was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cimarron, New Mexico and then, Milton Baptist Church in Brownwood, Texas. She loved cowboy boots, fancy hats and was known as the ‘Candy Granny’ for passing out treats and a smile to everyone she met.

She is survived by her second husband Henry N. Knox Sr.; his sons, Paul Knox, George Knox and Henry Knox Sr.; her brother, CJ Greenfield; daughter, Lar Ann; son, Riley and 10 grandchildren, 13 great- grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.
