John Henry McNelly, age 83, of Brady, Texas passed away Wednesday, October 11, 2023 in San Angelo, Texas.  John Henry was born December 13, 1939 in Matador, Texas to Joseph Franklin McNelly and Pearlie Mae (McDonel) McNelly.  He grew up in Matador and graduated from Matador High School.  He spent his life upholding the law.  He joined the Texas Department of Public Safety in 1961, receiving his commission in December of 1961.  He began his duties in the Drivers License division and in 1963 moved to the patrol division.  In 1969 he was promoted to the Intelligence/Organized Crime division.  In 1982 he was promoted to Lieutenant and in 1989 he was promoted to Inspector.  He retired December 31, 1991 after 30 years of service.  After he retired he provided security for the Texas State Lottery.  He was an avid golfer and he lived in Lake Travis for many years before moving to Brady, where he has lived for the last 25 years.

Graveside services for John Henry McNelly, with Honors provided by the Texas Department of Public Service, will be held at 11:00am Tuesday, October 17, 2023 at Rest Haven Cemetery in Brady with Reverend Bun Jackson officiating.  Friends may view and/or sign John Henry’s online memorial guest book at www.leatherwoodmemorialchapels.com.

John Henry McNelly is survived by his daughter Tina McNelly Bradshaw of Brady, Texas; brothers Ricky McNelly, Adam McNelly & John McNelly; grandchildren Brandy Jackson, Jonathan Bradshaw and Tiffany Bradshaw Friend; great-grandchildren Barrett Jackson, Emery Bradshaw, Easton Bradshaw, Evan Bradshaw and Emmett Friend and numerous nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers and 5 sisters.
