James Claud Godfrey, age 94, of Blanket, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, September 13, 2023.

Claud was born to W.D. “Dave” and Janie (Tyson) Godfrey on December 24, 1928, in Comanche.

Claud graduated from Early High School in 1946 and married Dorothy Edwards on August 25, 1948.  He was a lifelong dairy farmer in Brown and Comanche counties.  His happy place was the outdoors where he spent time with family and friends while fishing, hunting, watching his cows, or just enjoying the scenery.  In fact, he loved it so much that he and Dorothy slept outside on the porch, rain, shine, cold, or hot, 365 days a year for over 50 years.  Claud has been a long-time resident of the Blanket community since 1955.  He served on the school board for Blanket ISD, was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Zephyr, and enjoyed watching his kids, grandkids, and great grandkids participate in the sports that they loved.

Claud is survived by his sons, Grant Godfrey and wife Reca ad Norman Godfrey, both of Blanket, a brother, Jerry Godfrey and wife Linda of Abilene; fourteen grandchildren, thirty-one great grandchildren, fifteen great-great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and a host of friends.

Claud was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Travis Godfrey, sister, Christine Mathews, his wife of 72 years, Dorothy, a son, David Godfrey, a daughter, Claudia Harding, and a grandson, Shawn Godfrey.

A graveside service for Claud will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, September 15, 2023, in the Rock Church Cemetery near Blanket.  The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 at Heartland Funeral Home.
