Jose Guadalupe Mares, 57, of Brownwood passed away Thursday, August 10, 2023.

A visitation with family will be held at 6:00 PM, Tuesday, August 15, 2023 with a rosary service to follow at 7:00 PM in the Heartland Funeral Home Chapel.

Mass will be held at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, August 16, 2023 at St. Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Brownwood, Texas with Father Antonio Franco officiating.

Jose was born February 17, 1966 in Allende, Coahuila, Mexico to Genaro and Maria de Jesus (Hernandez) Mares.  They moved to Texas and Jose attended Brownwood High School before going to work for Kohler.  Jose worked for Kohler about 30 years and raised 3 children in Brownwood.  Jose was a man of many interests, a young man he loved to train race horses and had the opportunity to work with and care for a few champion race horses.  His passion for horses remained with him throughout his life.  Jose also loved everything 70’s and 80’s.  His 1978 Trans Am, brown truck to the movie stars of the day, Steven Seagal, Rambo, Rocky, Bruce Lee and western movies.  Jose was always up for some Buffalo Wild Wings or picking peaches and green grapes for an afternoon snack.  He enjoyed visiting Mexico and seeing family there where he would Bar-B-Que, make some rice and settle in for a great family hang out with cousins and friends.  Jose liked to dance, he would put on pearl snaps shirts, ponchos and hang out with his brothers for some cumbia and dancing.  His most important quality was his love for his family, he taught them baseball, and was always available for his sons and his grandchildren.

Jose is survived by his mother, Maria de Jesus Mares; sons, Jose Guadalupe Mares Jr. and wife, Jennifer, Mark Anthony Mares and Eduardo Mares all of Brownwood; brothers, Raul and Gabriel Mares of Brownwood; sisters, Maria, Blanca, Gloria, Elena & Daisy; grandchildren, Lila, Eli, Iris and Aliana; and many cousins, nephews, nieces and friends.

Jose was preceded in death by his father, Genaro Mares and a sister, San Juanita Isabel.
