Delton Wert Sweatman

Delton Wert Sweatman, of Brownwood, passed away on Wednesday, June 28, 2023, at the age of 84.

Memorial services with military honors for Delton will be held on Thursday, July 6, 2023, at 11:00 am in the Blaylock Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Bill Slaymaker officiating. Private interment will be held at a later date. The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 pm on Wednesday evening, July 5, 2023, at Blaylock Funeral Home. Arrangements are under the direction of Blaylock Funeral Home of Brownwood.

Delton was born on April 16, 1939, in Fredericksburg, Texas to Wert Sweatman and Alma (Mauer) Sweatman. He graduated from Tivy High School in Kerrville, Texas in 1957. Delton grew up showing animals in Kerrville, including having the Grand Champion steer one year. He married Cheryl Jean Elam on August 6, 1960. They were married for 45 years and had two children: Troy and Kristy.

Delton was in the Army from 1961-1963. In 1969, he moved to Brownwood with his late wife to manage the Ranchman’s Wool and Mohair, a role he had for over 30 years. Delton was active in the Brown County Youth Fair. His first Brown County Youth Fair was in 1970, and he served as assistant sheep superintendent for Mr. Wallace Perkins. He was the founder and chairman of the finance committee from the mid 1970’s until 2011. Delton held most every position from president of the board to chairman of several committees. He was instrumental in building the sheep and hog barn, aluminum seating at the rodeo arena, and helped to allocate funds to pay off start up costs of the Youth Fair Association. In addition to his professional role within the Youth Fair Association finance committee, he was also an active buyer in the premium sale.

At the 2012 Brown County Youth Fair, Delton along with Putter Jarvis and Bill Stewart were awarded a custom-made belt buckle by the Brown County Youth Fair Association for 40 years of service. Delton was the Grand Marshall of the 50th Annual Brown County Rodeo Parade in June 2013. In January 2017 at the 65th Annual Brown County Youth Fair, he was honored for his decades of service by renaming the Championship Club the Delton Sweatman Championship Club.

In 2007, Delton married Cheri Cook. He is survived by his wife, Cheri Sweatman; his daughter, Kristy Sweatman; brother, Melvin Sweatman; and granddaughters, Paige McLain and Hanna Adams.

He is preceded in death by his first wife, Cheryl Jean Sweatman; his parents, Wert and Alma Sweatman; his son, Troy Sweatman; and two sisters.

In lieu of flowers, Delton requested that memorial donations be made to Brown County Fair Association, P.O. Box 1101, Brownwood, Texas 76804.
