District Attorney Micheal Murray reported that on Wednesday, October 5, 2022, Michael Shaiden Humphries was convicted of the offense of Burglary of a Habitation and Tampering with Evidence and sentenced to twenty years in prison.

Humphries was convicted in the 35th Judicial District Court following a bench trial in front of Judge Sam Moss that began on Tuesday. Assistant District Attorneys Skyler Schoolfield and Alexander Hunn presented evidence that Humphries went to John Murray’s house at 1 A.M. with a firearm and the intent to shoot John. Humphries left a note on his car saying that his car was out of gas and spray painted the victim’s garage to divert law enforcement’s attention. After attempting to enter the home through the front door, Humphries entered the house through the bathroom window by cutting the screen open with his pocketknife. After realizing that John had woken up, Humphries escaped out the bathroom window. Humphries rifle jammed before he could fire it. Deputy Chris Angel responded to the house and found the firearm outside of the bathroom window. While Deputy Angel was taking pictures of the scene and interviewing the victims, Humphries came back to retrieve his firearm.

Investigators Chuck Woods and Leighton Wyatt responded to assist Deputy Angel with the investigation. Deputy Angel, Investigator Woods, and Investigator Wyatt with the Brown County Sheriff’s Office testified during the trial.

Because the Court found that Humphries used a firearm in commission of the offense, Humphries will not be eligible for parole until he has served ten years of his sentence.
