There was a boating accident at Lake Brownwood Saturday afternoon that ends with good news. KOXE News spoke with Brown County Game Warden Brad Reeves who investigated the accident.
The accident happened on the dam side of McCartney Island. According to Reeves, a vessel traveling south made a hard turn to the right, hit a wake which ejected the driver from the craft, causing the boat to go into an uncontrolled circle. The boat operator went under water for a time but managed to start swimming away from the boat. Reeves said an individual on a jet ski witnessed what happened and pulled the boat operator away from the circling boat. The boat continued circling, making contact with two boat docks before it finally capsized. There were people on the docks but no one was injured.
“In the end there were no violations and no injuries. The boater had not been drinking and the man had all his water safety equipment,” said Reeves. He noted that newer boats require a lanyard be inserted into a kill switch so that these type incidents don’t happen. This boat, however, was older and didn’t have a kill switch on it.
There was some damage done to the two docks and some damage to the hull of the boat but, in the end, a couple of other boaters came to assist and used ropes to flip the capsized boat back upright. They moved the boat to its trailer, drained it and hauled it away.
