Rex Mahan, Jr., age 94, of Coleman, died Friday, March 4, 2022, at Coleman County Medical Center.
The family will host a visitation from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Friday, March 11, 2022, at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel, 400 W. Pecan Street, in Coleman.
Family and friends are invited to a funeral service at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 12, 2022, at Gouldbusk Baptist Church, 7801 FM 1026, Gouldbusk, Texas 76845, with Rev. Alan Wallace officiating and Rev. Robert Hooker assisting. Interment will follow in the Shields Cemetery. Services are entrusted to Stevens Funeral Home.
Rex Cornelius Mahan, Jr. was born a fifth generation Texas on January 26th,1928, to Rex Cornelius Mahan Sr. and Pauline Harper Mahan in Brackenridge, Tx. He graduated from high school in Mullin, TX, in 1946, where he played tennis and ran track. He married Barbara Ann Harrell of Goldthwaite, Tx, in 1950. Shortly after, he joined the Air Force where he served in Korea and earned the rank of Staff Sergeant. Upon returning home in 1953, he joined his father at the family-owned San Saba Tractor Company. There he began his 69-year career as a tractor dealer. In 1956, Rex Sr. sold his half of the tractor business to his son, Max Mahan. This same year, Rex and Barbara began their family with the birth of their first son, Rex III “Rusty”. In 1959, they completed their family with the birth of their second son, Aubrey. In 1960, Rex and Max expanded their tractor business, when they bought the Abilene Ford Tractor. Rex and his family relocated to Abilene while Max stayed in San Saba. Not long after, Rex and Max decided to divide the dealerships. Max kept the San Saba location and Rex took Abilene location. Over time Rex owned as many as five Ford Tractor Dealerships as well as the Ford car dealership in Coleman, Tx, as well as other interests. In 1965, Rex and Barbara went their separate ways. In 1967, Rex married Betty Long of Lampasas. Betty had two children, Randy and De Aun Long. Rex raised them as his own. In 1969, Rex bought the Coleman Ford Tractor business where he relocated his home. Coleman is where he lived out the remainder of his life. He continued to run the tractor business, farm, and ranch until his final days. His last marriage was to LaVerle “Tootsie” Jameson. Rex loved his community and throughout the years served on the City Council, the Rodeo Association, Lifetime Member of the Black Angus Association, and a proud member of Gouldbusk Baptist Church. Often, you could find Rex tinkering at his tractor business, up in the air as a pilot, ranching, and hunting.
Rex is survived by his son Rex “Rusty” Mahan III and wife Dee of Bulverde, Tx, son Aubrey Mahan and wife Peggy of Helotes, Tx, step son Randy Long and wife Deborah of Shields, Tx, step daughter DeAun Dalton and husband Jay of Fisk, Tx, as well as Nine grandchildren: Brian Mahan of San Antonio, Tx, Daniel Mahan of San Antonio, Tx, Elisa Eoff and husband Clint of Christoval, Tx, Rustin Mahan and wife Rachel of Bertram, Tx, Hallie Cech and husband Josef of Helotes, Tx, Kelsey Grissom and husband Nathaniel of Castroville, Tx, Charliese Long Castleberry of Coleman, Tx, Jessica Seward and husband Shan of Goldthwaite, Tx. His great grandchildren include Arianna, Christian, Brendon, Marissa, Evan, Christian, Michaila, Molly, Cannon, Cason, Mallory, Bryson, Garrison, Kayden, Kenlie, Hudson, Arnold and Jacob as well as two great great grandchildren, Emma and Ember.
Rex was preceded in death by his parents Rex Mahan Sr. and Pauline Harper Mahan of Brownwood, Tx, brother Max Mahan of San Saba, Tx, brother Weldon Mahan of Brownwood, Texas, and Grandson Aubrey Matthew Mahan of Helotes, Tx.
