PROSPER, Texas – The Howard Payne University football team improved to 3-0 overall with a convincing 55-21 non-conference victory over the Hendrix College Warriors Saturday evening at Children’s Health Stadium.
The Yellow Jackets totaled a school record 754 yards of offense, 476 yards in the air. The previous record was against ETBU in 2014 with 720 yards (492 yards passing, 228 rushing).
HPU’s Jake Parker led the offensive attack with seven catches for 181 yards and three touchdowns. Landon McKinney was 12 of 22 passing for 294 yards and five touchdowns.
Max McCuiston had two catches and a touchdown and Otis Lanier also had two catches and one touchdown. Tauren Bradley led the rushing crew for the Jackets with 66 yards on 15 carries, and Derrick Berry followed with 54 yards on nine carries and one TD.
HPU’s Nick Infante was a perfect 5 of 5 passing for 103 yards and one touchdown. Jackson Coulson, Austin Valdez, and Ethan Cortez also saw time a QB for the Jackets.
The Howard Payne defense was solid holding Hendrix to 256 yards of total offense and just 82 rushing yards. The Jacket defense recorded four total sacks in the game.
James Jakubowski led the defense with seven tackles, four solo, two sacks, and one forced fumble. Byron Clark and Dae’Shun Weakly each had an interception.
HPU kicker Blake Phipps hit field goals from 25 and 26 yards while also recovering his own onside kick in the third quarter.
With the win, the Yellow Jackets match their 3-0 start from 2014 and will travel to Marshall, Texas next Saturday to take on conference opponent East Texas Baptist. It will be a 1:00 pm kick-off.
