Lindsey Passmore, age 96, of the East Sweden Community of McCulloch County was called to his heavenly home to be with his Lord Jesus on Thursday, February 11, 2021.  Lindsey was born April 14, 1924 in Alco, Arkansas to parents Andrew Passmore and Dessie (Fletcher) Passmore.  Lindsey was one of 9 siblings, 6 brothers and 3 sisters, raised in the hills of Stone County, Arkansas.  In 1940, he served in the Civilian Conservation Corp for 9 months in Arkansas and sent home money to help support his family.  In June of 1943, Lindsey enlisted in the U.S. Army where he proudly served his country as a combat engineer during World War II until his honorable discharge in 1946.

During this time, he trained at Camp Callen in California, Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas, and Camp Bowie in Brownwood, Texas.  He met his future bride, Helen Louise Engdahl of Rochelle, Texas, while stationed at Camp Bowie.  Lindsey told stories of taking Louise on a date to a movie and hitching rides from Brownwood to Rochelle to spend time with Louise and her parents.  Lindsey and Louise stayed in touch during his deployment overseas to the Philippines and later during his service in the Occupation Force in Japan.  After the war, Lindsey returned to the U.S. and found work in the oil fields of California.  Lindsey and Louise decided to marry so he sent her money for a train ticket to California.  They were united in marriage on January 23, 1949 in Inglewood, California.  Lindsey and Louise later moved to Odessa, Texas, where he worked in the West Texas oil field before finally moving to East Sweden in 1950. Soon they were joined by their 2 children, Lynn Gordon and Cheryl Louise, and many memories were made as a family.  Lindsey worked hard to provide for his family, and it was one of his proudest moments to see his children attend college and graduate from Texas Tech University.  In 2019, Lindsey and Louise celebrated 70 years of marriage before her passing.  Their love and dedication to one another was admired by all and set an example for their children and grandchildren.  Lindsey was genuinely devoted to his wife, through sickness and in health, and cared for her throughout her battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Lindsey, affectionately known as Papa by his grandchildren, was known for his hard work, loyalty to others, and compassion for people and animals.  He worked for the Texas Department of Transportation for 27 years, farmed, and raised cattle. He proudly served his community as a member of the Brady Presbyterian Church, as a volunteer firefighter in Rochelle, and as an active member of the East Sweden Community Center & Cemetery Association.  He dedicated many hours of work into improvements and maintenance at the East Sweden Community center.  Lindsey had a great love for the outdoors.  He was known for his green thumb and the plentiful vegetable crop from his garden he generously shared.  He also enjoyed hunting and fishing and shared those hobbies with his family.  Many great memories were made on camping trips to the Colorado River.  Other hobbies included wood working, carpentry, and caring for his pets.  His grandchildren have fond memories of creating wooden toys, puzzles, and crafts in Papa’s workshop.  Staying in touch with family was important.  Over the years, Lindsey enjoyed traveling to the Passmore family reunions in Arkansas to visit with his siblings and extended family.  In 2017 Lindsey participated on an “Honor Flight” to Washington, DC honoring his military service during World War II.  Viewing the war memorials accompanied by a grandson gave him pleasure.  He was a caring husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather and will be remembered for his sweet smile and big heart for others.

Funeral services for Lindsey Passmore will be held at 1:00 pm, Tuesday, February 23, 2021 at Leatherwood Memorial Chapels in Brady with Reverend Regina Maas officiating.  Interment with military honors will follow at the East Sweden Cemetery in rural McCulloch County.

Lindsey Passmore will lie in state Monday from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm at Leatherwood Memorial Chapels.  Friends may view Lindsey Passmore’s Memorial Video Tribute and/or sign his online memorial guest book at www.leatherwoodmemorialchapels.com.  Everyone is requested to wear face masks coverings during all services.

He is survived by his son Lynn Gordon Passmore and wife Bryce Anne of Lake Brownwood, TX; daughter Cheryl Louise Bruce and husband Gene of Childress, TX; sister, Pauline Tomlinson of Pekin, Illinois; grandchildren Leslie Bruce and wife Shirece of Childress, TX, Lindsey Whitaker and husband Dusty of Childress, TX, Ryan Passmore and wife Missy of Levelland, TX and Sarah Burleson and husband Brandon of Lubbock, TX.  He is also survived by great-grandsons Cutter, Sterling and Quay Bruce, Kolt and Kage Whitaker and Andrew Passmore.  Other survivors include cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends that loved him.  Lindsey was preceded in death by his parents, wife Helen Louise Passmore and 7 siblings.
