The Coleman City Council took the first step on Thursday night in the process of searching for a Chief of Police.  This came after the Council heard the tabulations of the November 3rd election where all Charter Amendments passed.  The Council then declared the amendments adopted and entered into the records of the City of Coleman immediately.  Council members (shown in photo) were given a copy of the newly updated City Charter reflecting the changes voters approved.

One of the amendments that citizens approved was changing from citizens electing the Police Chief to a Chief that is appointed by the City Manager with approval from the City Council.  After spending time in Executive Session from 6:04 pm to 7:41 pm to discuss the search process for Police Chief, the Council and citizens heard from City Manager Diana Lopez in open session.

“We will begin our search process for our appointed Police Chief.  When it comes to Chief of Police, this individual is going to be someone of the highest caliber,” Lopez said, adding the person chosen should be an authentic leader, can deliver mentorship and leadership for the department and city.

Lopez outlined a process which will include retaining a search firm and advertising the position statewide through Texas Municipal League and Texas Police Chiefs Association.

“The next step is that we recruit as far and wide as possible,” Lopez said.  She also recommended putting together a recruitment brochure.

Though appointed by the City Manager with approval by the Council, Lopez said she believes it is also important that input is received from the public.  She suggested a committee of 3 to 5 individuals be appointed to screen applicants after being vetted by the search firm.  As the list of candidates narrows, a community meet and greet with the final candidates for the job could be held.

Thursday night, the City Council voted 5-0 to retain a search firm and for the process to move forward.  The next scheduled meeting for City Council is Thursday, November 19.
