The City of Brownwood announces the reopening of Riverside Park on Friday, May 2, 2025, following the completion of significant major infrastructure upgrades under Phase I of a two-phase park improvement project.
Riverside Park, located along the scenic banks of the Pecan Bayou, is one of Brownwood’s most cherished recreational assets. Spanning over 80 acres, the park is a popular destination for outdoor activities, disc golf, kayaking, family gatherings, and community events such as car shows, cookoffs, and festivals. The recent improvements are designed to support both the day-to-day use of the park and events held that define Riverside Park’s role in the community.
The improvements at Riverside Park were initiated and identified as part of the adopted 2023 Parks Master Plan, developed through extensive community engagement including surveys and public meetings. Both phases were designed with the park’s existing use, public feedback, and anticipated future needs in mind.
Phase I prioritized critical infrastructure needs. Improvements include:
-
Demolition and reconstruction of existing roadways with new asphalt
-
Addition of over 180 designated parking spaces
-
Installation of road ribbon curbing, fencing, and improved sidewalks
-
New Oncor electrical transformer, underground utilities, and relocated lift station
-
Park-wide electrical and lighting upgrades
-
Installation of landscaping and irrigation
-
Construction of a modern pavilion with an expanded patio, string lighting, and food truck hookups
-
New entrance signage
Phase I improvements were made possible through federal American Rescue Plan funds, allowing the City to address long-standing infrastructure needs while preserving local financial resources.
Phase II improvements funded through a maximum award of Texas Parks and Wildlife grant will build upon the foundational upgrades by prioritizing additional recreation and community amenities. Proposed improvements include additional site furnishings, expanded playground with inclusive elements, paved trail enhancements, River view picnic facilities, signage, sand volleyball court upgrades and other additional amenities.
As Phase II plans progress, the scope may expand to include additional recreation-focused features. Notably, Riverside Park will remain open throughout Phase II construction, ensuring uninterrupted access for residents and visitors.
“Riverside Park is a vital place and part of life in Brownwood — a place for connection, recreation, and tradition,” said Mayor Stephen E. Haynes. “With these improvements, we’re ensuring the park remains a welcoming and functional space for generations to come.”
