ABILENE – The Brownwood Lady Lions track and field team continued its string of capturing the team championship at every meet in which they’ve competed, earning the 5-4A/6-4A area trophy Friday at the Shotwell Stadium Annex.

“I was super proud of the way we performed,” said Lady Lions head coach Chelsy Lipsey. “Like last week, I knew we could have this type of result but at this stage you have to show up and be able to do it and we did that. I’m looking forward to seeing what we can do next week at regionals. It’s going to be a big one.”

The Lady Lions placed first as a team with 216 points, again easily outdistancing runner-up and district rival Stephenville (84) for the second week in row, and won 10 of 17 events en route to earning 21 berths in the Region I-4A meet in Lubbock April 18-19.

Winning their respective events at the area meet were Sidney Windham in both the 3200 meters (11.55.86) and 1600 meters (5:36.9); Hannah Deen in the long jump (17-9); Grace Sparks in the pole vault (11-6); Braycee Lee in the 400 meters (58.6); Kate Tindol in the 300-meter hurdles (46.22); Kaya Phillips in the 200 meters (24.85); the 4×100 relay of Icess Hall, Kaya Phillips, Jade Morin and Aniah Hines (47.59); the 4×200 relay of Jade Morin, Kaya Phillips, Aniah Hines and Kate Tindol (1:40.34); and the 4×400 relay of Kate Tindol, Jade Morin, Rebekkah Delgado and Braycee Lee (3:57.43).

Meanwhile, the Brownwood Lions finished fourth as a team with 59.5 points, won one event and secured seven regional berths. Brownwood’s boys placed behind Stephenville (152), Lubbock Cooper Liberty (84.5) and Lubbock Estacado (60).

Trae Jones picked up the gold medal in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 14.78.

The Lady Lions again broke a pair of school records in the pole vault as well as the 4×100 relay.

“We got Grace in the pole vault, she went 11-6 which was her best as well as breaking her own school record, and then our 4×1 went 47.5 and broke their own school record,” Lipsey said.

The girls were knocking on the door of breaking two more school records Friday afternoon.

“Our 4×2 would have had a chance, but they didn’t have the best hand-offs, and I hate that Kate fell on that last 300 hurdle, but I’m proud of her for getting up and being able to finish,” Lipsey said. “I think she would have broken her school record, too, but I’d rather those things happen today rather than next week.”

Looking ahead to regionals next weekend, Lipsey said, “We talked all season that our goal was to win the regional championship and get as many to Austin as we can. It’s not going to be easy, we have to a super tough region, but we’ll go into it like we did this week and be ready to go compete when we need to.”
