Jackie Maxcey, age 86, of Brady, passed away Monday, April 7, 2025, in Fredericksburg, Texas. Jackie was born on December 1, 1938, in San Saba, Texas to Jack W. Owen and Anna (McLean) Owen. She grew up in San Saba and graduated from High School in San Saba. Jackie’s given name was Carolyn. Her middle name is Dale. When she was in high school, she decided she did not like the name Carolyn, so, she decided to change it. She adored her daddy, and his name was Jack. She went to school one day and told all the teachers, and her friends to call her Jackie… and they did! However, all her legal documents say Carolyn, except for her driver’s license. She had to carry an affidavit with her to prove Jackie Maxcey and Carolyn Maxcey were the same person. Her sister, Anita’s, middle name is Ruth. They are 18 months apart and they shared everything. A room, clothes, friends and even a bed. Jackie always said she learned all her bible memory verses by listening to Anita recite them out loud in bed at night. However, when they were fighting, Anita would call her Carolyn Dale, mean as hell. Well…what rhymes with Ruth???
She attended Texas State University where she earned her bachelor’s degree in education and was one of the school’s cheerleaders. She married Dean Taff on February 25, 1961, in San Saba. After finishing college, Jackie taught school for a few years. Dean passed away on March 6, 1988. Jackie married Kim Maxcey in January of 1991, and he passed away on March 30, 1996.
Perhaps, Jackie is best known for two things around Brady. Her porch, filled with pink flowers and her chocolate pie. If you were new in town, or had a birthday, or were sick, or happy, or were busy, or were sad, you were blessed with a homemade chocolate pie. If you know, you know! These pies were so famous, she had classes teaching how to make these pies. But of course, no one could do it quite like Jackie. Thankfully, Tisha and Kassidy have this amazing talent. The pies will live on, but just not quite as good or beautiful. She loved buying, planting, watering, and babying her flowers on her front porch. She won “Yard of the Month” too many times to count. This made her incredibly happy. And then there was Hairy! She loved that dog so much. They were made perfectly for each other. He brought her so much happiness. The most important thing in Jackie’s life was her grandchildren. What an honor, and gift that she gave each one of her grandchildren her total devotion, complete love, and adoration that they thought THEY were just slightly more favored than the rest. Jackie has been a lifelong area resident and was a member of the Redeemer Church in Brady.
