A Brownwood woman lost her life in a two-vehicle accident Thursday afternoon in Comanche County.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Kelley Jo Wellmaker, 47, of Brownwood, passed away following the accident, which took place at 1:18 p.m. Thursday on State Highway16, a half-mile north of CR 413.

The initial DPS report states Wellmaker was driving a 2023 Chevrolet Malibu passenger car that exited a private drive at Comanche County Medical Center and turned left onto SH 16. Meanwhile, a 2002 Chevrolet 2500 pickup was traveling north on SH 16 and approaching the private drive from which the car was exiting. There was also an additional vehicle in front of the pickup that was slowing down to turn into the same private drive. The driver of the car failed to yield the right of way while exiting the driveway, entering the path of the pickup. As a result, the pickup struck the car upon its exit from the driveway.

Weather conditions were sunny, the road was dry, and Wellmaker was wearing a seat belt, according to the DPS report.
