Brown County Chief Appraiser provides clarification regarding Homestead Verification

Brett McKibben, Chief Appraiser of the Brown County Appraisal District, issued the following press release Thursday morning:

In 2023, the Texas Legislature enacted legislation requiring local appraisal districts to conduct regular audits of homestead exemptions in their jurisdiction. The legislation left it to each district as to how that would be done, stating only those audits should be conducted at least once every five years.

In Brown County, we will be utilizing the services of a third-party vendor that identifies potential issues with existing homestead exemptions, as well as identifying those that perhaps should be receiving the exemption but do not currently. Since this is done on an on-going basis, it will not be necessary for homeowners to re-apply. HOMEOWNERS DO NOT NEED TO RE-APPLY. WE WILL CONTACT YOU IF THERE IS AN ISSUE.

We realize there has been a lot of information in the news and on social media regarding this issue. While you need not re-apply, if you have any questions regarding your exemptions, or anything else for that matter, please do not hesitate to contact us at 325-643-5676.
