The Brownwood Lady Lions maintained sole possession of first place in the District 5-4A soccer standings as they completed a league sweep of Little River Academy, 4-1, Friday at Gordon Wood Stadium.
After surrendering a goal just under 10 minutes into the match, the Lady Lions (16-3-1, 6-0) responded with two of their own in less than six minutes, and later tacked on two additional insurance goals.
“We started off a little slower and gave up a goal about 10 minutes in and that’s what it took for them to wake up,” said Lady Lions head coach Alexis Walker. “As soon as you get down, we have a rule that we want to respond within five minutes after that. They did respond to that, so hats off to the girls on the way they were able to recover.”
Regarding the goal allowed, Walker said, “It was more of a miscommunication, but we’re going to move forward and not dwell on it.”
Down 1-0 just 9:53 into the contest, the Lady Lions drew even only 75 seconds later as Braycee Lee found the net with an assist from Kynlie Lewis. Another 4:04 ticked off the clock before Nylah Hall scored the first of her two goals, with an assist from Adrianna Allen, as with 24:49 left in the first half Brownwood was on top, 2-1.
“Nylah’s been quite the addition,” Walker said. “She’s on fire and is now leading our district in goals. She completely changes our game and I’m so thankful we were able to get her after basketball season.”
With 1:07 remaining in the first half, the Lady Lions secured their first insurance goal from Isabella Garza en route to a 3-1 halftime advantage.
In the second half, the only goal belonged to Brownwood as Hall again found the net with an assist from Alma Bernal with 10:34 remaining for the final three-goal margin.
Next up, the Lady Lions host Gatesville at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the home finale.
“We’re going to honor our eight seniors and a lot of starters,” Walker said. “Every game we try for a shutout and three goals. We’ll need to start out a little bit faster to do that and I think they well. This is a wake up call we needed.”
