Gene Ajil Griffin was born May 18, 1935 in Brownwood, Texas, to John “J.W.” and Tessie Griffin. He passed on February 17, 2025 at the age of 89.

Gene attended Texas A&M and SMU, and received his Masters in Engineering at Oklahoma State. His entire professional career was with Texas Instruments, from internship to retirement. Once he found his way into safety engineering, his knowledge, experience, and dedication to high standards made for a perfect fit.

Growing up, his family lived in several places across Texas and Louisiana before settling in Dallas. He lived in Dallas from grade school until a few years before his retirement, spending the twilight of his career in the Sherman/Denison area, where he met and fell in love with Erna. Soon after, they married and moved to Comanche to be near his parents.

He was an avid camper and hiker, and he loved the great outdoors. He went on countless trips with the Sierra Club, his hiking buddies from TI, and his family. In particular, he loved Big Bend National Park and the Big Bend region–a love inherited from his parents and passed along to his sons. He had many adventures along the way, and great stories to tell.

Gene is survived by his wife Erna Griffin and his son Matthew Griffin. He was predeceased by his parents, his sister Katie Bonser, and his son Michael Griffin. He is fondly remembered by Marian Griffin, mother of his sons. He had strong faith in Jesus, and started every day with morning prayer time and coffee.

Gene had no desire for a memorial service, but please remember him by enjoying a walk in nature. His ashes will be scattered at the South Rim in Big Bend National Park, and with his family at Oakwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, you are welcome to send a memorial donation to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, if you wish. Thank you.

Arrangements are through Heartland Funeral Cremations of Comanche. Leave your condolences on his tribute page.
