The City of Brownwood has been awarded a $1,500,000 matching grant from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD). This marks the largest grant the City of Brownwood has received to date from TPWD and will be instrumental in the renovation of the Bennie Houston Recreation Center.

The grant, awarded through TPWD’s Indoor Recreation Grant program, will fund a comprehensive renovation of the facility. The City is currently in the conceptual design phase with BSW Architects, working to maximize the existing floor plan and create a modern, functional space for the community.

Proposed $3 million dollar improvements include:

  • A larger reception hall and lobby area

  • New gym flooring, lighting, and ceiling

  • A new kitchen with a serving bar and prep tables

  • A dedicated multi-purpose room for study/tutoring, classrooms, or game room activities

  • New ADA-compliant restroom facilities

  • A dedicated staff office

“This grant is an investment for the Bennie Houston Recreation Center and the Brownwood community,” said Mayor Stephen Haynes. “These renovations will allow us to better serve our residents and provide a safe, welcoming space for recreation, learning, and community gatherings. We are thankful to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department for their generous support and investment.”
