Brownwood High School (BHS) HOSA students attended the Area competition in Mansfield at Ben Barber Academy January 17-18. Five BHS students placed in the top three in their categories and will join three others who previously qualified to compete at the state level.

Even though some of the teachers who initially planned to go were out sick, Health Science teacher Valarie Scull accompanied students with a minimal crew and helped to ensure that the students were prepared and ready for competition. “These students had been working hard all year for this competition, and we knew we couldn’t let them down,” said Health Science teacher Annalyn Deen. “Mrs. Smith [BHS Principal] worked hard with us to rearrange everything so the students could compete.”

HOSA-Future Health Professionals is a student-led organization with a mission to empower members to become leaders in the global health community through education, collaboration, and experience. “HOSA means so much to me, even though I didn’t compete until my junior year,” said BHS HOSA President Jazzmyn Sanchez. “I’ve met so many incredible people who share the same interests and future goals as I do. HOSA feels like a second family and has provided me with countless amazing experiences and opportunities to lead other students involved. I’m so excited to be going to State and ending my senior year on a positive note with such amazing people!”

BHS HOSA celebrated phenomenal results at the competition Saturday with many making their way to the awards stage including Kyle Recolizado (1st Pharmacy Science), Xavier Martinez (1st Healthy Living), Jazzmyn Sanchez (2nd Personal Care), Hannah Deen (3rd Job Seeking Skills), Emory May (3rd Veterinary Science), Isaiah Rosas (4th Sports Medicine), Trinity Johnson (4th Personal Care), Trinity Roberts (5th job Seeking Skills), and Rylee Lynd (5th Health Career Photography).

Only the top three in each event qualify for State. In addition, BHS had four students who previously qualified for State in their district online testing event. A total of eight BHS HOSA students will travel to the HOSA state competition at Kalahari Resorts in Round Rock, Texas, from April 29 through May 1. Once there, these eight students will compete to qualify for the international competition held in June at the Gaylord Opryland Resort in Nashville, Tennessee.
