The confines of Gordon Wood Stadium have proven to be unfriendly to the Brownwood Lady Lions soccer team thus far in 2025 on the heels of the best start in program history.

Playing on their home turf for just the second time, the Lady Lions suffered a second consecutive shutout loss, 2-0 to the Godley Lady Cats, Wednesday night at Gordon Wood Stadium.

“We watched film on Godley all week long,” said Lady Lions head coach Alexis Walker. “We knew it was a going to be a physical game and they have a lot of speed, but on the other end of it we have the same abilities. In the game of soccer you have two put two halves together and we gave ourselves the opportunity in the first half to stay in the game, but at the end of the day we have to help our defense out and put points on the board. If we don’t put points on the board, 80 minutes is a long time for your defense in a defensive game and they get tired. This Godley team is one of the top teams in the state and I fully believe they’re make a deep run in the playoffs, and to play teams like this gets us ready for Stephenville.”

Unlike the 1-0 loss to Marble Falls this past Friday, the Lady Lions did not control possession most of the game, yet still kept Godley off the scoreboard until just over 13 minutes were left in regulation. There, Godley scored twice in a 45-second stretch, and the Brownwood offense had no answer.

“Their first goal was a very, very good ball and hats off to them for running right through our back line,” Walker said. “She played a perfect ball right through our back line and nobody stepped to the ball and they had numbers going forward and capitalized. She shot it right to the corner, knew where to go, and didn’t waste her opportunity. Right after that, we gave up a penalty kick in the box and that’s a 50-50 chance and a hard situation to put yourself in. At the end of the day I’m proud of them for the first half, but you have to but two halves together to win a game.”

During their undefeated 8-0 start to the campaign, the Lady Lions outscored their foes 37-1, while in two home games thus far Brownwood has given up three goals and is yet to score.

Regarding the offensive slump the Lady Lions now find themselves in, Walker said, “We have to be able to put points on the board to give our defense a little bit of grace. We have to do a better job of capitalizing on our opportunities, but I have full faith we can do that. We’ll move on from this and go back on the road in two days to Diamond Hill and hopefully get ourselves back on the right track.”

The Lady Lions (8-2) visit Fort Worth Diamond Hill-Jarvis at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
