During Friday’s State of the City address, Brownwood Mayor Stephen Haynes announced five retail businesses that will be housed in a new strip mall, located at the site of the former Cinema Twin I & II adjacent to Commerce Square.
The City of Brownwood and TABAT Properties then jointly announced in a press release that five new national retail tenants will be opening in Brownwood in 2026.
The new Shops on Commerce development will be located at 537 W. Commerce featuring these new retail options, and site work has already begun to make way for this new project.
“This center will bring new shopping options to Brownwood including Ross, Ulta Beauty, Five Below, Bath & Body Works and James Avery,” said Brownwood Mayor Stephen Haynes. “We are thrilled to work with TABAT Properties on this project and help bring these additional retailers to Brownwood.”
The Shops on Commerce retail development will include more than 41,000 square feet of new retail space, and it will represent a capital investment of around $9 million. Mayor Haynes said this will be the largest multi-tenant retail development to be built in Brownwood in several decades. The new center is scheduled to be completed in the first quarter of 2026.
