Trailing after the first period and despite shooting just 25 percent for the night, the Brownwood Lady Lions did enough on the offensive end to halt a two-game skid and even their District 6-4A mark with a 44-30 home victory over the Graham Lady Blues Tuesday night.
The Lady Lions (20-8, 2-2) faced a 8-7 deficit after one quarter, but score the first the six points of the second period. Graham (9-15, 0-4) then closed the gap to 13-12, but Brownwood scored six of the final eight points of the half to build a 19-14 lead at intermission.
Brownwood then went on a 9-2 run to start the second half for a 28-16 advantage, capping a 17-4 surge that swung the momentum firmly in the Lady Lions’ direction.
“At this point in the season a win’s a win, ugly or not,” said Lady Lions head coach Heather Hohertz. “It was must-needed win and they responded and found a way to pull away in the second half.”
Trinity Roberts led the way for Brownwood with 19 points and converted a trio of three-pointers, while Jade Morin also finished in double figures with 11 points and a team-high nine rebounds.
“Trinity found her outside touch,” Hohertz said. “I’d like to see make more shots inside the paint a little earlier in the game to get herself going sooner, but I would glad to see how outside touch come back. And Jade just plays so hard that good things happen. She had eight offensive rebounds and nine rebounds overall. She just went and got the ball and went and finished. She always brings the energy and that’s good to see. She’s been a nice addition to our team.”
Also scoring for Brownwood were Hannah Deen with six points, Icess Hall with five and Lanie Johnson with three points.
Graham received 12 points from Briley Randall and nine from Katelyn McGeehee.
The Lady Lions venture to No. 8 Brock at 5:45 p.m. Friday to wrap up the first half of district competition. The Lady Eagles (18-7, 3-1) suffered a 52-50 double overtime loss to No. 3 Glen Rose (26-2, 4-0) Tuesday night.
“They’ve won state championships for a reason, whether it’s 1A, 2A, 3A and now 4A,” Hohertz said. “It’s going to be an extremely difficult challenge for us, but I have some competitors that are ready to roll up their sleeves and fight and that’s why you play the game. We’re going to go to Brock Friday and give it our best shot to give ourselves a chance to be successful at the end of the game.”
